Hedsor House is a grand Italianate-style country mansion located in Buckinghamshire, perched high above the River Thames and surrounded by 100 acres of historic parkland. The estate’s origins date back to 1166, when the de Hedsor family built a medieval manor here, giving the estate its name.

The current house, completed in 1868, was designed by James Knowles for the 4th Lord Boston. It replaced earlier manor houses, including a Tudor house and an 18th-century house designed by Sir William Chambers, which was destroyed by fire in 1795. The present house is notable for its Italian villa style and unique domed hall.

In 1934, Hedsor House was given as a wedding present to Florence and Philip Shephard and has remained in the Shephard family for four generations.

Interesting facts...

Between the 1950s and mid-60s, the house was leased to the US Air Force and used as a top-secret communications centre processing U2 spy plane information during the Cold War. Security included guard trip wires in the woods, and the main gates were widened for military tanks, which still don’t meet in the middle today

From the 1970s to early 2000s, it was leased to International Computers Ltd, and the computer used to draw the UK National Lottery numbers was once housed in Hedsor’s courtyard
