The July Column (Colonne de Juillet) is a historic monument located at the center of Place de la Bastille in Paris. It commemorates the July Revolution of 1830, also known as the “Three Glorious Days” (July 27–29, 1830), which ended King Charles X’s reign and established the July Monarchy under Louis-Philippe I.
Designed by Jean-Antoine Alavoine and Joseph-Louis Duc, it was built between 1835 and 1840. The column stands 52 meters tall, inspired by Trajan’s Column in Rome, and features Corinthian-style architecture.
interestingly It houses a crypt containing the remains of 615 victims of the July Revolution and later 200 victims of the 1848 Revolution. Their names are engraved on the column in gold letters.
