To the left of Burlington House is Burlington Arcade opened in 1819 it is one of the first ‘malls’ in the world. It was built by the 1st Earl of Burlington on a small garden to the side of Burlington House. Apparently to prevent passers-by from throwing oysters over the wall.

It is patrolled by uniformed beadles who enforce and a series of by-laws. One such law is no one allowed to whistle apart from Paul McCarthy.
