The Carlton Club has been the spiritual home of the Conservative Party for nearly two centuries. It was founded in 1832 by Tory peers, MPs and gentlemen as a place to coordinate party activity after the passing of the Reform Act. The club is named after Carlton Terrace of which it was originally located. The club moved to St. James in 1940 after its original home was destroyed by German bombing. The current building was a former club called Arthurs which closed the same year.

On the ground Floor is the Churchill Room, it contains paintings of Churchill and his father side by side. Interesting as Churchill was a member of the Liberal Party for longer than he was a conservative. The Liberal party actually removed his painting there when he left.
